This was a saying that my high school lineman coach, Bill Schwabenbauer, came up with. He would yell it in young football players faces when he saw them lifting light weights with reps ranging from 30, 40, even 50 repititions.
Over the years I have found some truth to this saying. When I weighed over 300 pounds, I would clunk 45 pound plates on a barbell and lift it for about 6 to 10 repititions. Now, when I do physical training with the Army, they have us doing high repititions of push-ups, sit-ups, and they have us lift our 7 pound rifle over our heads at least 100 times.
The formula is simple, big weight with low repititions made me BIG, and small weight with high repititions made me LEAN, or "small" in a sense.
Enjoy
